How much does interior painting cost in South Florida? (2026)

2026 cost data for interior painting by house size and by room, what ceilings and trim add, and the humidity and texture factors specific to South Florida.

Published Updated 6-minute read

Angi's 2026 data puts a whole-house interior repaint at $2,022 on average, most jobs $965–$3,089 [1] — about $1,100 a room [2], or $2–$6 per square foot [1]. Where you land depends on how much of each room you paint: walls only, or walls plus ceilings, trim and doors.

Key numbers

  • Whole house: $2,022 average, $965–$3,089 typical, $350–$5,800 end to end [1]
  • Per square foot: $2–$6; $2.75 average for walls only, $4.70 with walls, trim and ceilings [1]
  • Per room: about $1,100 average, $200–$2,000 range [2]
  • Ceilings $1–$6 per square foot; trim and baseboards $1–$3 per linear foot, to $6 where access is hard [1][2]
  • Surface preparation $0.50–$0.75 per square foot; drywall repair averages $600; wallpaper removal about $3 per square foot; popcorn ceiling removal $1–$2 per square foot [1][2]
  • Painters' labor: $20–$50 per hour [2]
  • Recoat window on a waterborne alkyd enamel: 16 hours at 77°F and 50% relative humidity, longer when it is humid [5]

What a whole house costs

Interior sizeTypical repaintSource
1,000 sq ft$2,000–$6,000[1]
1,200 sq ft$2,400–$7,200[1]
2,500 sq ft$5,000–$15,000[1]
3,000 sq ft$6,000–$18,000[1]

Those bands are wide because "painting the interior" describes several different jobs. Walls only, in a house that has been maintained, sits at the bottom. Walls, ceilings, trim, doors and closet interiors in a house being prepared for sale sits at the top — Angi's own averages separate the two at $2.75 and $4.70 per square foot [1].

What a single room costs

RoomTypical rangeSource
10 × 10$200–$600[2]
12 × 12$290–$870[2]
14 × 16$450–$1,350[2]
Bathroom$200–$400[2]
Kitchen$300–$750[2]
Bedroom$300–$750[2]
Living room$900–$2,000[2]

A living room costs several times as much as a bathroom for the obvious reason — wall area — and one less obvious one. Large rooms have more furniture to move and mask, and masking is labor at the same hourly rate as painting.

The lines that are easy to miss

Most of the variance in an interior quote is in work that is not "painting the walls":

  • Ceilings: $1–$6 per square foot, smooth ceilings at $1–$3 [1][2]. Knockdown and orange-peel textures, which are common in Florida houses, hold more paint than a flat ceiling of the same area.
  • Trim and baseboards: $1–$3 per linear foot, up to $6 where it is hard to reach [1][2].
  • Accent wall: $700–$1,800, or roughly 20–30% added to the room's budget [1][2].
  • Preparation: $0.50–$0.75 per square foot [1]. Drywall repair averages $600 and wallpaper removal about $3 per square foot [1][2].
  • Popcorn ceiling removal: $1–$2 per square foot [1] — frequently bundled with an interior repaint here, because the two disturb the same rooms.

What Florida humidity actually changes

Not the price. The schedule.

Waterborne alkyd and urethane enamels — the finishes worth using on trim, doors and cabinets — cure slowly and cure more slowly in humidity. Benjamin Moore specifies ADVANCE at 4–6 hours to touch and 16 hours to recoat at 77°F and 50% relative humidity, states that high humidity or cool temperatures prolong dry, recoat and cure times, and asks that shelves and tabletops not be returned to service for 5–7 days, with up to 30 days to reach full hardness and final sheen [5].

That is the honest answer to "can you do the trim tomorrow?" in August. A crew that recoats a humid enamel on the manufacturer's dry-weather schedule produces a finish that prints and marks for weeks.

The other Florida-specific item is texture. Knockdown walls and ceilings take more material than smooth drywall for the same measured area, which is a real difference between a quote written from a floor plan and one written after somebody stood in the room.

Local figures, with a caveat

Aggregator modeling for Fort Lauderdale specifically puts a roughly 1,280 sq ft interior at $4,354–$7,783, or $4–$6 per square foot, on about 122 labor hours [4]. Those estimates are generated from national inputs rather than collected from local invoices, so they belong in this guide as an indication of where the local market sits inside the national range — higher than the middle — and not as a quote.

For the same reason we do not repeat published per-gallon paint prices as fact. Angi lists primer at about $10, flat at $13, semi-gloss at $17 and zero-VOC at $35 a gallon [1]; those are below 2026 retail for the premium interior lines most professional jobs specify, so read them as a floor.

How to compare two interior quotes

Two numbers for the same house are almost never for the same work. Before comparing them, check that both say:

  • Which surfaces. Walls only, or walls plus ceilings, trim, doors, closets and inside cabinets. At $2.75 against $4.70 per square foot, that one line is most of the difference [1].
  • How many coats, and whether a primer is included where the color change or the substrate needs one.
  • What preparation is included. Filling, sanding, caulking and drywall repair are separately priced work — surface preparation alone runs $0.50–$0.75 per square foot [1].
  • Who moves the furniture, and what happens to window treatments and wall fixtures.
  • What the product is. A named line and sheen per room, rather than "premium paint".

If one quote is materially lower than the other, one of those five lines is usually the reason, and it is worth finding out which before deciding.

Doing it yourself

The 2026 hourly rate for a painter is $20–$50 [2], and the material cost of a single room is small next to that. The arithmetic usually favors DIY on one bedroom and stops favoring it at a whole house, at ceilings, at anything requiring a ladder over a stairwell, and at enamel work where the cure schedule above decides the finish.

Permits

Interior repainting does not need a building permit in the jurisdictions we work in. Fort Lauderdale's 2026 guidance implementing HB 803 lists interior painting among the single-family works that can qualify for a permit exemption where the job costs under $7,500 — but notes the exemption is not automatic and the owner has to file a Residential Permit Exemption Request for written approval, and that it does not extend to electrical, plumbing, mechanical or structural work, or to properties in Special Flood Hazard Areas [6]. Cabinet replacement and drywall repair appear on the same list [6].

How Smart Coat handles this

We quote interiors after walking the rooms, counting what is actually being painted — walls, ceilings, trim, doors, closets — and writing each of those as its own line. That is the only way a homeowner can compare our number with somebody else's, and it is the reason our scopes are longer than most. Trim, doors and other enamel work get their own lines as well, because they cure on a different schedule from the walls and the rooms are planned around that.

FAQ

Common questions

Short answers first. If yours is not here, ask us — we would rather answer it than guess at it.

How much does it cost to paint a 12x12 room?

$290–$870 for a 12×12 room in Angi's 2026 data [2]. A 10×10 is $200–$600 and a 14×16 is $450–$1,350 [2]. Those figures are walls only — adding the ceiling at $1–$6 per square foot and trim at $1–$3 per linear foot moves a room toward the top of its band [1][2].

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a 2,000 sq ft house?

Angi's whole-house average is $2,022, with most jobs between $965 and $3,089 [1]. By size, a 1,000 sq ft interior is $2,000–$6,000 and a 2,500 sq ft interior is $5,000–$15,000, which brackets a 2,000 sq ft house [1]. The spread is driven by how much of the house is being painted: walls only averages $2.75 per square foot, walls with trim and ceilings $4.70 [1].

How much do painters charge per square foot for interior work?

$2–$6 per square foot is the 2026 range for interior painting [1][2]. Hourly, painters run $20–$50 [2]. Older data from HomeGuide splits it differently — $1–$3 per square foot of actual coverage area against $3–$7 per square foot of floor space — which is worth knowing when two quotes seem to disagree about the same house [3].

Do painters charge extra for ceilings and trim?

Yes, and it is usually the largest optional line on an interior quote. Ceilings are $1–$6 per square foot, with a smooth ceiling at the low end of that; trim and baseboards are $1–$3 per linear foot, up to $6 where access is awkward; popcorn ceiling removal is $1–$2 per square foot [1][2]. Textured ceilings, common in Florida, take more paint than flat ones.

Does humidity affect interior painting in Florida?

It affects timing more than the finished result. Benjamin Moore's ADVANCE alkyd is specified to dry to touch in 4–6 hours and recoat at 16 hours at 77°F and 50% relative humidity, and the data sheet states plainly that high humidity or cooler temperatures prolong dry, recoat and cure times [5]. On trim and doors the same sheet asks you not to return shelves and tabletops to service for 5–7 days, and allows up to 30 days for full hardness [5].

Do I need a permit to paint the inside of my house?

Not normally. Fort Lauderdale's 2026 guidance on HB 803 lists interior painting among the single-family works that may qualify for a building permit exemption when the job costs less than $7,500, though the exemption is not automatic — the owner files a Residential Permit Exemption Request and gets the Building Official's written approval [6]. Structural, electrical, plumbing and mechanical work and properties in Special Flood Hazard Areas are excluded [6].
